Grease Trap Replacement & Pool Backwash Drainage Modifications

Issue

The Boat Slip Resort & Beach Club was informed by the Provincetown Board of Health that an alarm state was raised by their existing grease trap in the Winter of 2023. It was determined that the existing grease trap had failed and was required to be replaced in order for The Boat Slip to maintain food service. Additionally, in the Summer of 2023, the Provincetown Board of Health informed the Boat Slip that water flow readings from vacuum sewer sensors indicated that there was a possibility that pool backwash effluent was being discharged into the town sewer system from an existing swimming pool drywell tank. We were tasked with determining if this condition was present and if so, how to reach a successful resolve.

Diagnosis

Vital Structures solicited JDE Civil of Easton, MA, a Civil Engineering firm, to perform a site survey to develop plans for a grease trap replacement. Due to the Boat Slip being an active resort in the summer months, it was planned that replacement of the grease trap was to occur in the off season during the Winter of 2023-2024. Vital Structures provided the Boat Slip with project management services in order to coordinate JDE Civil, the Board of Health, and Cape Cod Excavation.  Vital Structures and JDE Civil was present at Town Board of Health meetings to present new proposed plans for approval and to answer questions prior to issuing a permit.

Solution

Cape Cod Excavating successfully installed a new grease trap with digital sensors in December 2022. JDE Civil and Vital Structures were present to confirm as-built construction which was provided to the Town for record so that a new operating permit could be obtained the following season.

Under the same permit as the grease trap replacement, Cape Cod Excavating disconnected all plumbing connections from the Resort and the Town sewer to the pool drywell/septic tank and installed new drainage chambers with a distribution box to satisfy the Town’s request. JDE Civil provided documentation to the Town that any suspect conditions have been corrected and no longer pose an issue to the town sewer.
